CAEL / Key Initiatives / ALFI / ALFI Assessment Toolkit - Tools

Retain adult learners and ensure their success

The Adult Learning Focused Institution (ALFI) tools provide a framework of policies and practices to make educational programs more attractive and accessible to adult learners. The Tools, based on CAEL’s Principles of Effectiveness for Serving Adult Learners, help pinpoint both the institution’s strengths and areas for improvement.

Used together, the Institutional Self–Assessment Survey and the Adult Learner Inventory compare faculty and administration views of existing adult programs with the actual perceptions of adult learners.

The ALFI report provides:

  • A detailed campus report on the findings from both surveys
  • Comparative data on how the perceptions of adult students match up to the perceptions of faculty and administration
  • National benchmarking data to compare an institution’s results with institutions serving adults nationwide

Inside the ALFI Assessment Toolkit

The ALFI Assessment Toolkit consists of two instruments: The Institutional Self-Assessment Survey (ISAS) and The Adult Learner Inventory ™(ALI)
Each can be administered independently, but taken together, the surveys provide a powerful tool for colleges and universities that want to align institutional policy and structure with the needs of adult learners enrolled in credit bearing programs.

Evaluate your Adult Learner Practices

The Institutional Self-Assessment Survey (ISAS) assesses a wide range of activities, policies and practices at your institution — from financial policies to assessing learning.

Because a cross-institutional team of administrators and faculty completes this survey, it offers a unique opportunity for dialogue about adult learners across departments as well as providing important data about adult learner programs.

Measure Satisfaction among adult learners

The Adult Learner Inventory™ (ALI) is designed for students 25 and older completing undergraduate programs.

Created by Noel-Levitz and CAEL, the ALI measures how satisfied your adult learners are and what is important to them. These measurements show you how you can better meet the needs of your adult learners, as well as what issues should receive top priority.

Valuable benchmarks aid decision-making

The ISAS delivers benchmarks that compare your institutional responses with other colleges and universities.

With the ALI, you can benchmark your adult learner responses with those of other adult learners nationwide.

Used together, the Institutional Self-Assessment Survey and the Adult Learner Inventory compare your own faculty and administration’s view of existing programs with the actual perceptions of adult learners. Click here for more information.
