How do I know if I am eligible to
receive FutureLink services?
If you are a full-time, part-time, regular, or term associate
employee of Verizon Network Services Companies in the Mid-Atlantic
region, you are eligible to participate from your date of
hire. Associate employees are not eligible to participate
while on a leave of absence. Management employees are not
eligible for FutureLink services.
Who is CAEL?
CAEL administers the FutureLink program. See www.cael.org

What is the TABEC?
The Training Advisory Board Executive Council is a joint committee
of CWA and Verizon.
What is the ACCLS?
Advisory Council on Career and Life Strategies is a joint
committee of IBEW and Verizon.

I don’t know the name of
the FutureLink advisor who is assigned to serve employees

Do I need to meet with my FutureLink
Advisor before I enroll in a class?
That would be a great idea, although it is not required. Your
Advisor will help you make choices that are just right for
you.
Do you offer anything that can
help me deal with stress at work?
If stress is an issue at your workplace, you will definitely
want to ask your Advisor to schedule the Emotional
Intelligence workshop to learn tips on dealing
with co-workers in stressful situations. The DiSC
assessment and the “Can We
Talk?” workshop also provide knowledge
and teach skills that can help you manage stress.There are
free articles and seminars available on the VZ- Life, Mayo
Clinic and LifeWorks web sites. IBEW members click on www.ACCLS.com

Can I get college credit for training
or even volunteer work?
Yes! We encourage you to try. Prior
Learning Assessment is a process used by colleges
and universities to evaluate your knowledge for college credit.
You can present a portfolio of your experiences and even take
exams to earn credit without taking classes. Contact your
advisor to sign up for the FutureLink workshop, Give
Credit Where It’s Due, or sign up for
the Home Study version, Course #43. You will also have the
opportunity to meet one-on-one with your advisor with either
method you choose.
Can I call or send my FutureLink
Advisor an email directly?
Yes! Your Advisor wants to hear from you and is ready to help
you.

Can I request a specific FutureLink
workshop to be held at my site?
Of course! Contact your FutureLink Advisor directly and make
your request. Workshops are held for groups of associate employees,
so you may want to get a small group together before you call!

Home Study
How many courses can I enroll
in at one time?
Enroll in up to two courses at a time. There is no limit on
the number of Test Prep Guides and Skill Enhancement Study
Guides.
Where are home study materials
sent, and how are they sent?
Materials are sent through the company mail to your work location.
How long does it take to receive
materials?
Company mail delivery varies. It is best to allow up to 3
weeks.
What is the time limit to complete
a course?
The standard time limit is 4 months.
What should I do if I cannot complete
my Home Study course on time?
Call the Home Study department at 800-497-5465, option 2 and
leave a detailed message, or send an email message to
futurelink@cael.org. We will extend your completion deadline
by 30 days
Can I complete a Home Study course
that I enrolled in last year, even though the deadline has
passed?
Of course. Just call or email and let us know your intentions.
We’ll re-set your enrollment date and
give you a new deadline. 4 months
How do I earn a certificate?
You must achieve an average combined score on the tests of
75% or higher.
I no longer have my certificates
and need those to help me qualify for another position?
You can verify that you completed courses with Verizon’s
Attestation form. Click

How can I get my UTB-R test scores?
Call Verizon Central Scheduling at 703-974-1818. The Job Families
you qualify for will be listed on the information you receive.
Can I get both the CD version
and the Paper and Pencil version of the UTB-R Prep?
You may order one version at a time, and can return it if
you want to receive the other version.
Can I keep the Home Study materials
when I have completed the course?
To keep costs down, the TABEC and ACCLS committees request
that you return the material when you complete the course.
However, you may choose to keep it if you intend to use it
as reference material.
Which course will help me prepare
for the secondary test to become a Network Technician or COT?
We recommend Introduction to Telecommunications Technology,
which also includes a test prep guide for the required Technician’s
Minicourse. However, you may request the test prep guide without
taking the course.
Can my family member enroll in
courses or request test prep materials?
Materials are for eligible employees only.

No. There is no time limit on credit for job-related higher
education and training.

Future Prep
How do I sign up for a class?
Call 1-800-497-5465, option 5, or complete the online enrollment
form. Sign-up sheets can also be downloaded and printed. Click
here for the link!
What do I do if I want to enroll
in a class but, according to the schedule, the course is not
currently being offered at my work site?
Call us and we will place your name on a Waiting List. If
you would like to shorten the waiting time, we will give you
a sign-up sheet to post at your location. When it is filled,
you can fax it to us and we will begin the process of scheduling
the class.
How many associates must enroll
to set up a class on-site?
We prefer to have 12 associates enroll; however, a class may
be scheduled with fewer enrollees if it is approved.
Can I still attend a class if
I missed the first session?
Yes, but you must attend the second class if you would like
to receive a certificate of completion. (Exception: Attendance
at all three sessions is required for TMC and FLMC-R.)
What do I do if there is bad weather
on the day of the class?
Call us to find out if the class was canceled. If we cancel
the class, you will have the opportunity to attend a make-up
session. You can also ask your Class Contact for information
on the status of the class.
Will I earn a certificate when
the class is over?
To earn a certificate, you must attend the required number
of sessions. For Introduction to Telecommunications Technology,
you must also achieve 75% on the final test.
Will I need to do homework when
I attend a Future Prep class?
To get the most from attending the class, you will want to
do some reading and reviewing on your own time.
Who is the “Class Contact”?
The Class Contact is an employee who has agreed to help CAEL
with some of the administrative tasks, such as scheduling
a room and receiving materials. In some cases, this person
will be the Learning Advocate.

Tuition Assistance
Are FutureLink and VZTAP the same
program?
No. FutureLink is a bargained-for, joint labor/management
program. VZTAP is your Verizon tuition assistance benefit.
CAEL’s staff in Philadelphia administers the FutureLink
program, and tuition assistance is managed in CAEL’s
Chicago office.
How do I contact VZTAP?
Call 1-866-994-3470 or go to http://tamsonline.org/vztap.
Where can I get the tuition assistance
policy and an application?
The policy and application are on the website, and you may
print a paper copy. If you do not have access to the
VZ-TAP website, request a faxed copy by calling the main number.

Competitive Skills Awards
To preserve limited resources for bargained-for programs,
the TABEC (Training Advisory Board Executive Committee) has
determined that it must discontinue the distribution of monetary
awards for the Competitive Skills Awards Incentive Program.
The final dates to be eligible to receive monetary awards
are indicated below:
- For the First Step Award, as well as for the three-course
Award and the six course-Certificates, associates must submit
enrollment forms and transcripts to CAEL by March 31, 2005.
(Only courses completed on or before December 31, 2004 are
eligible.)
- For the Associate and Bachelor Degree Awards, associates
must submit enrollment forms and transcripts to CAEL by
August 31, 2005. (Only degrees completed by spring semester
May/June 2005 are eligible.)
You may continue to submit forms and transcripts to CAEL
if you wish to receive Certificates of Completion for completing
any of the components of the Award Program. These Certificates
may be included on your PED form as job qualifiers.
