Student Advising

Adults learn differently, face different work-life balance issues, and may have access to different financial aid sources than their younger counterparts. Many also need to re-learn how to be a student. To help you provide the advising support adults need to stay in school and graduate, the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL) trains and certifies your advisors to work with adults. We also advise your students directly through a nationwide network of advisors.

Participate in Online and Onsite Advisor Workshops

Several times a year, CAEL offers workshops and webinars to help advisors better serve adult students. In the one-day workshop, advisors learn to respond to adult learners’ needs and receive an advisors’ and students’ resource toolkit. We also conduct onsite workshops tailored to your institution’s specific advising needs and goals, or you can sign up for our advising webinars

Take Advantage of the Advisor Certificate Program

For more in-depth training, the Career Advisor Certificate offered by CAEL and Indiana University School of Continuing Studies (SCS) offers complete coverage of adult students’ unique attributes and challenges. Connecting career advisement with adult learning theory, faculty from the SCS Master of Science in Adult Education program teaches the five online career advising modules. Upon successful completion of the modules, participants are eligible for five continuing education units (CEUs).
