| Consulting
for Colleges and Universities:
The world of higher education is rapidly changing, and as
many adults are returning to school or attending college for
the first time, so is the face of the student body. As of
1998, adult students (age 25-64) comprised 43 percent of college
enrollment in the United States, an increase of over 60 percent
since 1985. Traditional methods of teaching are in many ways
inadequate for these students, many of whom may work full-time,
attend school part-time, and juggle family, work and other
commitments. Is your college or university prepared to meet
the needs of adult learners and remain competitive with other
institutions that currently do so? In other words, is your
institution an Adult Learning Focused Institution (ALFI)?
CAEL can help with the challenge of serving this non-traditional
student population. Through a grant from The Pew Charitable
Trusts, CAEL has developed a set of
Principles of Effectiveness for Serving Adult Learners.
These principles form the basis for practices that can make
your educational institution one that understands the characteristics
of this diverse group of learners.
At your request, CAEL’s higher education consultants
will devise customized strategies for improving access to
and quality of learning for adults, and for attracting and
retaining this rapidly growing group of enrollees. Our consultants
will examine your institution’s distinct capabilities
and take into account its current programs, staff resources,
outreach programs, and the demographic makeup of the prospective
student body. Then, CAEL will devise a comprehensive plan
that helps your institution implement the Principles of Effectiveness
for Serving Adult Learners and at the same time maintain its
unique educational philosophy.
