Name

CNA-to-LPN Program
Good Samaritan Society
Sioux Falls, SD (headquarters)

Program Purpose

To ensure the development and skill building of new Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs).

Program Description

As part of a larger effort to build a multi-tiered nursing career lattice, this multi-site, long term care organization has worked with CAEL to develop a CNA apprenticeship program (funded in part through a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor). A mentoring component allows experienced CNAs to gain supervisory and coaching skills while helping to build the confidence and skill level of new CNA apprentices.

Progress

The program has enrolled 170 apprentices from 16 facilities in 10 states; 80 of these have enrolled in or completed Mentor training. After the implementation of the training, the retention rate among CNAs is 72% (as compared to Good Samaritan’s overall retention rate of 51%.)
