LiLA Legislation Hits Illinois

“LiLAs are a win-win-win for Illinois – for our workforce, for industry, and for our economy”

 – Illinois Senator Don Harmon

We have our first LiLA state legislation!

As part of our mission to advance lifelong learning for working adults and increase access to postsecondary education for them, the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL) has been promoting Lifelong Learning Accounts (LiLAs) in a number of states.

On July 3rd, Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich signed into law SB2931, authorizing the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity to establish an Illinois LiLA pilot in the healthcare sector. The pilot would provide a maximum $500 state match for combined employer and employee LiLA contributions for up to 500 Illinois health care workers.

The strong bipartisan support for the legislation reflects Illinois’s and the nation’s growing recognition of the need to invest in the education and training of our workforce.

For more information about CAEL’s LiLA initiative and our state policy work, visit our LiLA website at www.cael.org/lilas.htm.
