The Internal Talent Marketplace is Open for Business

Adult learners and those who support adult learners’ success have a lot to be thankful for this year, but so too do those focused on workforce development. That’s because 2016 has seen a host of positive movement in the way of fostering talent to increase employee retention, skills, education and engagement. CIO’s recent article on the importance of career mobility affirms this, pointing to an aspect of career pathing software that organizations are employing to great effect. Citing the results of a recent survey by Future Workplace, “Future Workplace Forecast: Navigating the Future of Work,” the article notes that many HR leaders and hiring managers have noticed that increasing visibility of internal career opportunities allow employees to get a taste of new roles and prepares them for success. This is creating bustling internal talent marketplaces.    

How do organizations benefit from this marketplace? For one thing, we know that upskilling an extant workforce is an effective means of bridging an organization’s skills gap with greater expediency and at a lower cost than hiring new employees. As the article notes, career mobility programs can provide employees with line-of-sight into the skills and knowledge they need for future roles, which in turn can raise their awareness to employee-sponsored opportunities to increase their competencies.

When employees are made aware of new internal roles that they can hold down the line, they’re also far more likely to stay at the organization. Internal talent marketplaces, provided by programs that support career mobility, give employees a future to work toward and visibility into the steps they need to take to get there.     

The article also notes that one common thread among organizations named as the “best places to work” is that they often provide career mobility opportunities. For organizations seeking the right talent, the great employer branding these opportunities foster is essential. 

Citing career mobility programs recently implemented by the likes of Cisco and MasterCard, the article touches on how the rise of pathing solutions is meeting the needs of employees and employers alike. For the sake of our workforce, these solutions give reason for optimism as we head into 2017.
