CAEL Joins Adult Learner Advocates to Create National Adult Learner Coalition

CAEL is proud to announce that it is part of a group of four associations that have joined together with a unified message advocating for adult students and the higher education institutions that serve them. Along with support from Lumina Foundation, CAEL is joined by the Presidents’ Forum, the Online Learning Consortium (OLC) and University Professional and Continuing Education Association (UPCEA) to form the National Adult Learner Coalition.

Kresge Foundation $2 Million Loan Expands CAEL’s Prior Learning Assessment Service

In case you missed it, the Kresge Foundation, the prominent philanthropic foundation dedicated to expanding opportunities in America’s cities, provided CAEL with a $2 million low-interest loan. The loan is being used to expand CAEL’s LearningCounts online prior learning assessment (PLA) service, which helps students gain credit via portfolio. PLA expedites the process of degree or credential attainment, saving students time and money, encouraging program completion.

CAEL Featured in Nationwide Campaign for Adult Learner Advocacy

Last year ended on a high note for the cause of advocating for adult learners, with CAEL’s president and CEO Pamela Tate sharing five things adults should know before going back to school. Tate’s article was part of a nationwide campaign drawing attention to the adult learner. Spearheaded by publishing group Mediaplanet and distributed by USA Today, the campaign highlights the many ways increasing access to higher education for adult learners can benefit our country.

Welcome 2017 with a Webinar on Adult Student Support Assessment

Last fall, Washington Monthly released its Best Colleges for Adult Learners rankings, a first for the magazine and a significant step toward universal recognition of the needs of the adult student—a growing population that deserves our support. In developing its ranking methodology, Washington Monthly reached out to CAEL for insight into institutional support adult students need for success. Informed by CAEL’s Adult Learning Focused Institution (ALFI) survey tools, instruments institutions can use to compare their institutions’ perceptions against their adult students’ satisfaction with their programs, Washington Monthly developed assessment criteria aligned with the principles that form the foundation of ALFI.

Four Trends in Higher Education Seen Throughout CAEL’s 2016 International Conference

Last week, more than 500 advocates for adult learners converged in Chicago for CAEL’s 2016 International Conference. Attended by those representing higher education, industry, government and non-profit sectors, participants shared the conviction that increasing access to higher education for adult learners is essential for the success of our country. With so many of the nation’s experts on higher education and adult learner success in attendance, it’s fitting that the most salient trends seen today in academia and industry were brought to the fore.
