Tennessee Puts Forth a Model for Tuition-Free College Access for Adults with Tennessee Reconnect
In February, we shared the news that Tennessee would be offering tuition-free access to the state’s community colleges through its Tennessee Promise scholarship program. Now comes word that the state may soon offer a similar program to increase access to higher education for its population of adult learners, known as Tennessee Reconnect.
Similar to the Tennessee Promise program, Tennessee Reconnect would provide tuition-free access to two years of community college by providing last-dollar scholarships—any necessary funding not already covered by a student’s existing scholarships, aid or waivers. The program would be offered to students over the age of 24, students who are often precluded from scholarships or other student aid that only full-time students can qualify for.
With an estimated 900,000 adults statewide without a degree, Tennessee’s program, if passed, would have a far reach.
