Embedding English Instruction into Workforce Education: Models that Work

Webinar:  April 9, 2026, 2 PM EST

Description:

English proficiency is often treated as a prerequisite to workforce training and credential programs, effectively excluding millions of workers who are ready to learn, earn, and advance. The U.S. workforce system currently serves just 2% of adults with limited English skills—a talent pool that makes up 1 in 10 working-age adults. But it doesn't have to be this way. This webinar will showcase proven models that integrate English instruction directly into workforce education programs—including apprenticeships, IET programs, and industry-recognized credential pathways— so learners build language and technical skills simultaneously. These competency-based approaches expand access to community college programs, boost training completion rates, and create pathways that turn untapped multilingual talent into enrolled students and credentialed workers. Dr. Katie Brown will share research-backed frameworks for adult language learning and demonstrate practical implementation models that institutions are using successfully. From self-paced pathways to bootcamp-style programs and personalized coaching models, attendees will learn how to design contextualized English upskilling programs that ensure English skills are a bridge, not a barrier, to workforce success. Attendees will leave with actionable strategies for creating competency-based ESL programs, understanding what it takes to build an inclusive adult learning ecosystem, and designing programs that deliver measurable results for both learners and institutions.
