Fireside Chat- Employer Partnerships in Action: Lessons from the Blue Economy

Webinar:  March 27th, 2026, 12 PM EST

Description:

Water is far more than an environmental resource – it is a powerful economic engine. From Infrastructure and advanced manufacturing to energy and environmental innovation, the movement, use, and quality of water generate vast economic activity known collectively as the “Blue Economy.” Unlocking the potential of the Blue Economy requires a future-ready workforce that is prepared to enter, advance, and lead across evolving industries.

This fireside chat will explore how strong education and employer partnerships can help build and sustain talent pipelines – both in the Blue Economy and beyond. This conversation will begin with a high-level look at CAEL’s new research for Current’s Great Lakes RENEW Talent Engine, funded by the NSF. Drawing from this body of work, it will explore findings about Blue Economy workforce strategies that align education and training with industry needs, and how to strengthen pathways from learning to employment.

The session will then highlight real-world lessons from Waubonsee Community College and its employer partner, Xylem. Through the innovative Business and Industry Leadership Team (BILT) model, Waubonsee has engaged key employers as active partners in program design and curriculum development. The BILT approach ensures that education programs remain responsive to industry needs and that learners are prepared for careers.

Through this discussion, participants will gain practical insights into how effective employer engagement and education partnerships can strengthen talent pipelines, support regional economic competitiveness, and create clearer pathways from classrooms to careers.
