New University of Wisconsin-Extension Case Study Looks at Competency-Based Education Success
by CAEL on Aug 09, 2017
Like its cousin prior learning assessment (PLA), competency-based education can be a highly effective model for helping students earn credit by demonstrating college-level learning gained from outside of the classroom. Also like PLA, to be successful, CBE must receive the right institutional support from stakeholders throughout a given college or university.
Fortunately for institutions considering offering or revising a CBE curriculum of their own, a new CBE University of Wisconsin-Extension case study lays a solid foundation for CBE success. Based on the insight gained from stakeholders responsible for its UW Flexible Option, which provides University of Wisconsin students with self-paced CBE programming, the case study looks at how institutions can develop the following areas to support their own CBE efforts:
- Faculty and curriculum development
- Budget planning
- Communications
- Enrollment management and technology solutions
- CBE metrics
- CBE policy
The Lumina Foundation-funded case study provides a strong framework for CBE. Both two- and four-year colleges and universities can benefit from the findings of the study, helping institutions implement and improve CBE offerings with scalable resources. Key takeaways provide meaningful solutions to challenges that may discourage CBE adoption or success.
